Downtown Harrisburg is home to a bevy of history and culture, you just need to know where to look.

Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts has been a staple of downtown for more than a dozen years, its unique parts forming a hub of art, education and culture.

One of its parts, the Select Medical IMAX theatre, is a large format 3D-capable movie screen dedicated to showing a range of documentary films and major motion pictures, among others.

This week and running through April 30, catch
Journey to the South Pacific 3D. Narrated by Academy Award® winner Cate Blanchett, Journey to the South Pacific will take moviegoers on a breathtaking IMAX 3D adventure to the lush tropical islands of remote West Papua, where life flourishes above and below the sea. Join Jawi, a young island boy, as he takes us on a journey of discovery to this magical place where we encounter whale sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and other iconic creatures of the sea.

As the state capital, Harrisburg is also home to The State Museum of Pennsylvania, which features exhibitions and collections documenting the state’s heritage.

The Museum also features a planetarium and regularly hosts multiple shows for learners of all ages. Starting this week and running through June 1, check out Passport to the Universe. This planetarium show of the Universe treats the audience to realistic close-up views of star fields and planets, taking them on an exhilarating flight through a virtual re-creation of our universe, into the Orion Nebula, out of our galaxy, and deep into intergalactic space.

Also running now through June 1, The Planetarium at The State Museum of  Pennsylvania is featuring Black Holes: the other side of infinity. This planetarium show uses the latest discoveries and observations to help us view the formation of the early universe, star birth and death, the collision of giant galaxies, and a simulated flight to the super massive black hole at the center of our own Milky Way Galaxy.
