Expand your cultural knowledge this spring with a tour of any of these art exhibitions, on display now.
New this week via the Art Association of Harrisburg is a special Black History Art Exhibit on display in the Atrium of Harrisburg’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center. The works feature pencil drawings, collages and paintings created by students from the Harrisburg School District. Runs through March 31.
The National Civil War Museum is featuring “In the Service of Our Nation: Conscription during the Civil War” now through June 1. This exhibit examines the events and reasoning that led theUnion and Confederate governments to pass conscription acts during the Civil War, exemptions attached to them, and the reaction of the people.
Also new at the National Civil War Museum is the exhibit, “1864,” which features some of the Museum’s rarest artifacts from 1864 that are not regularly on display. The exhibit cover the battles, strategies and civilian lives throughout the fourth year of the American Civil War. Runs through 2014.
The U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center has a special Prisoner of War Exhibit, “Kregie Life” running now through June 1. Trapped in a German POW camp during World War II, Carl Holmstrom spent two years capturing prison life in his art. His drawings and watercolors depict the suffering and humor of confinement in Stalag Luft III.
On display now through June 26, take in Harrisburg’s historic past with the Reily Family Portraits Exhibit at the John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion. The exhibit includes 9 beautiful oil portraits, dating from the early to late nineteenth century, and related documents and artifacts. The exhibit will trace the history of the Reily family and its role in the development of Harrisburg.
The Perry County Council of the Arts PCCA Gallery is featuring Paintings by wildlife artist Don Phillips now through April 16. Phillips original oil paintings feature a variety of subject matter including flora and fauna, bids and animals of the wild. Opening reception this Friday, March 21.
The Art of Tom Duran will be on display at the Ned Smith Center for Nature & Art now through Aug. 30. Duran began his career as an artist and taxidermist for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh before spending 12 years as a staff artist for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Tom’s work has also been featured on several covers of Game News.
